10 tips for a Mediterranean garden

A beautiful garden doesn't need magic, but it does need consistency and a few professional tricks. These are the ten we use most on the Costa Daurada.

1. Keep the garden tidy

A weekly tidy-up prevents pests and weeds and lets plants grow better.

2. Use plants suited to the climate

Lavender, rosemary, oleander, African daisy or gazania take the sun and ask for little. See more in the plant finder.

3. Drip irrigation at dawn

Automatic irrigation set for the morning saves water and prevents leaf scorch.

4. Prune at the right time

In winter or late summer. Never in great heat or frost.

5. Fertilise by season

In spring and autumn, compost or organic fertiliser. It improves flowering and growth.

6. Protect against wind and salt

Near the sea, choose hardy species and use hedges as windbreaks.

7. Control pests naturally

Neem oil, potassium soap or organic insecticides. Check the leaves every week.

8. Pots with good drainage

With drainage holes and light compost so they don't get waterlogged.

9. Plan by season

Spring: sow and fertilise. Summer: water and watch for pests. Autumn: prune and plant. Winter: protect and repair the irrigation. You'll find month-by-month detail in our lawn guide.

10. Call a professional for the hard jobs

Pruning tall trees, automatic irrigation or a full design turn out better in expert hands. Ask us for a quote, no obligation.
