Watering
Water at dawn, never in the hours of sun. It's better to water deeply on fewer days than a little every day: the roots go down and the lawn copes better with heat. In summer, with sprinklers, three or four waterings a week are usually enough; in winter, often none.
Mowing
Never cut more than a third of the height at once. In summer, raise the mowing height: longer blades shade the soil and the lawn scorches less. With sharp blades, the grass doesn't fray and yellows less.
Fertilising
Fertilise in spring and autumn. In the heat, fertiliser can scorch the lawn, so it's best avoided in July and August.
If the lawn turns yellow
- Dry patches in summer: not enough water in that area. Check the sprinklers reach everywhere.
- Yellow all over: lack of fertiliser or too much water. Feel the soil: if it is waterlogged, water less.
- Bare patches: scarify and reseed in spring or autumn.
Rather forget about it? With our garden maintenance we do all this for you and adjust the irrigation every season.
Frequently asked questions
How often should you water the lawn in summer?
With sprinklers, three or four deep waterings a week at dawn are usually enough. It's better to water on fewer days for longer than a little every day.
When should you feed the lawn?
In spring and autumn. Best not in July and August, because in the heat fertiliser can scorch it.
Why does a lawn turn yellow?
Almost always due to lack of water in that area, overwatering or lack of fertiliser. Feel the soil: if it's waterlogged, water less; if it's dry, check the sprinklers.
